Chewing Gum and Music

15 May 2008

Some people can work while listening to any kind of music, but I am not one of those gifted souls.  Sometimes, I can listen to classical music that I’m unfamiliar with, but that’s about it.  For me, the difference depends on whether the work is, as I call it, “mindless” or not.  If I’m doing mindless work, then I can listen to music without any negative impact on my work.  In fact, if the work is really boring, then listening to something keeps me from passing out from boredom.  Conversely, when I’m doing work that involves a lot of thought, I get too easily distracted by music with words or familiar musical themes.  To keep from getting too tired or fatigued from doing work that involves a lot of thought, I (get ready for this) . . . chew gum.  I know, nothing particularly novel, but it’s pretty effective for me.  There’s something about chewing gum that keeps my mind alert and active.  It probably won’t work for everyone, but give it a try if you’re pretty bogged down with work.

Typewriters

1 May 2008

As a now-ancient technology, typewriters have been replaced by more powerful word processors. Last fall though, I stumbled upon a typewriter in my sister’s room and learned a few valuable lessons.

Pen Colors

1 May 2008

On any given day, I keep about 4-5 different color pens in my bag. Since I take notes in my book, I like having visual cues based on the color that I write. For example, anything that a professor points out in class is written in red. Everything that I write as I’m going through the material is written in purple. That way, at a later point when I’m going through my material, I’ll be able to quickly know what my professor has pointed out and what I’ve written. This is especially useful when I’m using pre-owned books that have a lot of writing in them. One semester, I made the mistake of thinking that I could just remember which marks I made and which marks were from someone else (we both used black ink). Haha. After that, I decided to start writing everything in purple in pre-owned books. It’s not a common color for people to use to mark up books, and it’s not as in your face as hot pink. As a result, I can always know which annotations I made.

Index Card Todo List

30 April 2008

It’s easy. Take an index card, write about 3-5 different things that you want to accomplish today, and it’ll be a perpetual reminder of what you need to get done. I generally keep all my todo’s in a PDA, but once I put it away, it’s easy to forget about a task without constant checking. A simple index card in your field of vision can be a great motivator. It makes me want to get things done just so I can cross them off.
